2024 Reader’s Advisory Seminar

The annual Reader’s Advisory Seminar was on 19 March, 2024. 9.30am – 3.30pm. Featuring authors Ellen van Neerven and Kate Holden as keynote speakers, as well as presentations from many NSW public libraries, SLNSW, and the ALIA Graphic Novel group. Book in to hear about successful programs, promotions and ideas from around the state.

Reader’s Advisory is an essential skill for all library staff, and this is an excellent opportunity for professional development. The seminar will be held in the new Auditorium at SLNSW. With it’s improved capacity for hybrid events, it offers the opportunity for on-site networking and discussions, as easy well as on-line participation for others.

10.35am Comics

  • Gabrielle Cundy/ALIA Graphic: how graphic novels utilise multiple genres at a time to appeal to broader audiences, how graphic novels can bridge the divide between age groups and how these crossovers can promote literacy, and how librarians can utilise specific RA tools to promote graphic novels in general readers’ advisory
  • Wollongong Libraries 20 minutes: Comic Gong - Readers Advisory in a range of formats and genres across a broad collection of events
  • Followed by a 15 minute discussion on how you might take these ideas back to your library (on site discussion plus online comments)

11.30 5 minute talks

12-1 lunch - provided for onsite, provide your own for online

  • Joanna - Multicultural bulk loans

2.10 Kate Holden (in person) - 1 hr including question time
