Staff local studies
Local studies collections and information can be complex and require the use of multiple sources. Local studies services require skilled staff. It is preferable for staff to have library, archive, gallery or museum qualifications as that gives a solid ground to build on. It also depends on how many staff there are, and the overall staff skills mix. All library staff should have a knowledge and awareness of local studies. The Ref-ex training can be helpful.
Engaging staff in collecting can help with awareness of the collection either by them collecting material from home, photographing the area, collecting material from local businesses and organisations or passing on potential donor suggestions.
