Check your collection development policy. What kind of reference materials are collected for children? Does your library collect textbooks?

Check your website and Intranet in case you have one. It may also still be available in print, check your catalogue. You may need to talk with your Collection's staff.

Readers' advisory

Read two to three titles from your junior collection and discuss them with your children's staff.

Expand your reading choices to genres you have not read before. If you are not sure where to start ask the Children's staff for possible suggestions.

You could discuss what interested you about the title. Would you suggest this title to others? What is the age suitability of the title? Are there similar titles you could suggest?

Things to consider

  • Check what resources your library has to help parents of young children and babies.
  • Are there subject headings in your catalogue?
  • Are there lists available?
  • What resources are easy to find to assist this group of patrons?
