3. Adult Summer Reading Club

Adult Summer Reading Club that ties in with the Childrens Summer Reading Club

Some suggestions for reading on the wild side have been added. There is place for the adult summer reading. It might be something small such as booklist, The whole family reading on the wild side. There already is some nice merchandise. Target slightly older reader. Opportunities for families, younger parents, etc.

4. Relationship building

Looking into dialogues between patron and borrower to make them feel comfortable to return and ask for more suggestions. Building relationships involves feedback, involve understanding of borrower expectations. It’s also about not judging the reader when they are returning unread books.

ACTION: Generic feedback form for RA to be placed on WIKI. This is only to be given to people who you have had a RA interview with and that they have used the book. Perhaps trial across the state for a month to see if we get feedback.

It’s a nice extension to RA suggestions. This will help us evaluate RA work. It will take a while to build up a picture of what is really happening across the state.

Copenhagen Public Library asks you to comment on your loans when you are renewing your books online. This would be a great system if your LMS system can support this. Having free text would allow for multilingual input also.

5. READING PROFILES for HOME LIBRARY clients

Ellen did a paper for the Home Library Service to help them further understand what their clients doorway preferences were.

Nancy Pearl reading doorway.

4 doorway/appeal characteristics.

She says that people enter according to the following:

  • Story – page turner, relish the action/pace
  • Setting – key in science fiction, history, non-fiction
  • Language – style of writing, literary fiction
  • Character – key biography, relationships, series
  • The main doorway that someone reads in makes a big difference as to what you suggest people read next.

Their doorway tends to be their comfort zone. This is not a comfort zone you should push someone out of though you can use a lot of overlapping information.

“Tell me what you have been reading lately” works very well to start an readers advisory dialogue between a librarian and reader.

The Home Library group want a lot more information that they can use to help their clients. They would like to develop a checklist.

The RA group felt that there were two types of Home Library clients therefore there was a need to develop two pathways.

1. The Traditional HLS client

This client has the initial conversation with the HLS staff member to discuss their likes and dislikes. The library staff member makes the majority of their reading decisions. The initial interview seems to be happening but a regular reviewing of client needs is not being conducted. The Readers Advisory group suggested that an annual interview reviewing client needs be conducted.

2. The Emerging HLS client

Many new HLS clients have worked and used the internet for over 15 years. The are web savvy and tech savvy. Using web 2.0 social tools for these clients would allow for a better delivery of service. Making these clients aware of selection tools such as the library catalogue, reviews, librarything, etc. and allowing them to order their own books but the library mostly facilitates the deliver of the items requested.

ACTION:

Asking for volunteers to take part in a development of developing pathways and checklists for HLS clients from both the Readers Advisory and Home Library Service.
