Planning the 2019 Book Week Forum Aims / what do we want people to get out of the event?

  • Grenfell Library (solo library operator) has a regional perspective – support for ideas and connections (authors / entertainers / illustrators etc.); ideas for running events locally; cost effective ideas
  • Kiama Library (small team) have come to many extravaganzas in the past; looking for great ideas for working with the books – especially picture books; inspiring people to do things in their own libraries
  • Liverpool Library (large metro library with branch staff involved in presenting Book Week) enjoy coming to look for other ideas; libraries that have lots of branches may have staff who are isolated; sending a few members of teams
  • Want people to be able to get ideas to engage children with books and themes; broader than the obvious “super hero stuff”
  • Ideas for social media / outreach about Children’s Book Week (eg Facebook) that libraries can use to build excitement in local communities. Could we get input from some of libraries that we know are good at creating content for Facebook (eg. Fallon Spangler at Broken Hill might be able to contribute in this way)?
  • Ideas for doing something different at the library to the programs offered in local schools (perhaps a stronger focus on the Eve Pownall books to re-engage children with non-fiction books)
  • A plan for sharing the ideas with people who can’t come to the event.

Audience

  • People come from all types of public libraries, different qualifications and different levels of experience.
  • We can’t be “one size fits all” but we can offer a wide variety of ideas and inspiration so that there’s “something for everyone” and people take home what they need … this is a useful measure of success for the event.

Venue

  • At State Library, we need a flat floor venue with a stage and groups sitting around tables >> Mylee to see what’s available

Date

  • prefer week beginning 20 May … the following week is the CBCA conference in Canberra
  • are there any clashes?
  • ALL please email Mylee any dates that won’t work
  • Mylee to see what dates venues are available during that week

Timing

Event organisation

  • Program from previous years for ideas - Mylee to share some examples
  • New items to include in the program
  • Exploring the theme – group activity at tables to generate ideas
  • Social media ideas to help libraries spread the book week excitement in communities via Facebook

Format for the 2019 program

  • Snapchat filter photos acknowledging this team
  • Copyright considerations / publisher’s permissions
  • Exploring the theme > game / brainstorm
  • Eve Pownall (non-fiction) ideas for how you could use them more; making information books a big focus for kids who imagine everything is on the internet
  • Junior Readers
  • Older readers (Leonie was very enthusiastic in previous forums?) > Instagram / Snapchat ideas or examples too? >> Samantha Butler volunteered to coordinate this section
  • Lunch
  • Picture books
