Mylee Joseph from the SLNSW facilitated a workshop to help the group articulate its needs and what they would like to do for the coming year. The following are notes from that session. Outcomes are listed at the end. What’s in it for me? What do I want to get out of the group professionally? The Group was asked to write down what they wanted to get out of the group on a post-it note and put it aside until the end of the session. Responses were:

Strategic Network Committee This Committee replaces the old Research Committee and the group can make suggestions to it on focus areas to gather data. The Marketing Group is more influential if it speaks as one. Possible areas of research are: - Survey of non-users? - How do you measure a usage survey? Opportunities & Challenges for the Group

Best practice: Wollondilly, Central West Implications of mergers: separate identity for Library from Council. The group could put up a position paper around this, arguing for it. It was decide that a theme would be designated for each of the 3 meetings for 2017: 1. Social Media – Hawkesbury Library Windsor 9 May (11am start) 2. Marketing/Positioning of Libraries – Chatswood Library August 3. Impact Evaluations – full day seminar – TBC SLNSW

A sub group of Paula (Bayside) Maddi (Mosman) Louise (Sutherland) and Tynelle (Sutherland) will work on setting up the meetings and finding guest speakers. Paula will be the conduit between the Library Managers and the rest of the group. Round table

Public Libraries in NSW Facebook Page updateMarch 2017

- As at 06 March 2016 the Public Libraries in NSW Facebook page has grown to 773 likes. An increase of 6.32% since our last meeting (November 2016). - For the period 18 November 2016 – 06 March 2017: o We delivered 213 posts to a total reach of 67,741 people with a total impression count of 104,726. o Our most popular posts have been: - Reach: 6,740 / Impressions: 10,776 / Likes: 455 / Comments: 19 / Shares: 73 - § Reach: 1,867 / Impressions: 3,053 / Likes: 68 / Comments: 2 / Shares: 27

Thanks to Eric and Barbara from Randwick for managing the Facebook page for the last few years. Paula (Bayside) and Kelly (Sutherland) will now manage the site for a while. Don’t forget to load your stories onto the Society of Secret Librarians Facebook Group to be loaded onto the page.

Ku-ring-gai · New format for the eNews using Campaign Monitor www.campaignmonitor.com. Accounts can be set up for free, but there is usually a fee for sending content, based on the size of the subscriber list. · Seniors Week – 3 Information Sessions. Also for Senior’s Week- “Tell Your Story” which is an oral history project. Ku-ring-gai library received $3000 for NSW Seniors Week thru family and community services. 18 people interviewed by staff and videoed, will have exhibition with photographs and video clips from interviews · Author talks – Nicola Gates, Grantlee Kieza, Mem Fox, Meg and Tom Keneally; · Explore and create program - focus on daytime events for adults with craft and technology themes – very popular was “Training in 3D printing” · e-news (library news) – new format – presented in single column scroll, clear and systematic. Added icon links eg renew loan eg2 visit e-library. Has tripled access statistics. · New Clubs: Film club based on Beamafilm – stream movies – documentaries ( not mainstream) with group discussion; Recipe club – share cooking ideas and recipes - March theme “chocolate”;Teen Book Club – first one March 7! · Outreach presentation of Ku-ring-gai library’s services and resources at Ku-ring-gai Rotary

SLNSW · State Library is getting ready to launch its dedicated YouTube channel. As part of our soft launch we have released a selection of videos about the Library's collection, as well as recorded talks and events and behind-the-scenes footage. More to come in the following weeks.An email has been sent out to the public library network encouraging librarians to subscribe. · the first stage of our #LiteraryMocktails social media campaign was very successful - recipes have now been created around the winning titles and these will be printed onto postcards for distribution as a DrugInfo resource in public libraries. The early designs for the postcards were shown on Friday 3 March at the Drug Info forum and will be rolled out in the coming weeks. · planning has begun for a Jane Austen celebration in July - 200 years since her death on 18 July 2017. Our program of events include a high tea and trivia night. Are there any campaign ideas that would work across the public library network eg. simultaneous reading of Pride and Prejudice, #janeausten200 twitter campaign etc.

Randwick · Marketing plan: o Rather than a separate document, Randwick City Library uses Randwick City Council’s Integrated Planning and Reporting (IP&R framework) to facilitate its strategic planning each year. o For example, in preparation for the 2017-18 1 Annual Operation Plan, we have highlighted “Digital literacy” as an area of strategic focus. This focus will not only touch marketing, but also have implications across other areas of the business and has been broken down into sub-tasks including: § Staff audit (to identify knowledge gaps) § Audit of existing subscriptions and redistribution of investment § Staff training § Development of marketing material § Events and programs to increase awareness and encourage user ship o Outcomes and achievements against KPIs are reported on quarterly (this reporting period may be different across different Councils) providing clear visibility and accountability of performance as well as achievement of key milestones.

· Exhibitions and events: o Exhibitions: § Colours of the Country III: Saturday 28 January – Friday 10 March · An exhibition of a variety of colourful, unique beanies that were entered into the Alice Springs Beanie Festival. The colourful exhibition encapsulates the whimsical essence of the Beanie Festival and also highlights the works produced by Indigenous artists from the Central Desert region who are regular collaborators in this cross-cultural event. · This exhibition was on loan from Artback NT – for exhibition enquiries please contact: Neridah Stockley (Visual Arts Touring Program Manager): (08) 8953 5941 / art@artbacknt.com.au

§ This is where they Travelled: Wednesday 1 March – Friday 28 April · An exhibition of informative panels that profile the lives of a number of Aboriginal people who lived around the coastal part of Sydney between the early 1800s and the 1930s. The exhibition was developed as part of the Arts NSW 2015 NSW History Fellowship by historian Dr Paul Irish and researchers from the La Perouse Aboriginal community, many of whom are descendants of one or more of the Aboriginal people featured in the exhibition. It was launched in Sydney at History House during NAIDOC 2016 and is now a touring exhibition. · This exhibition is on loan from Dr Paul Irish – for exhibition enquiries please contact: Dr Paul Irish: [02] 4465 2546 / paul@mdca.com.au.

o Seniors’ Week: § In celebration of Senior’s Week, Randwick City Library held Join the Club, an expo style event where we have received EOIs from a large number of membership groups (including local sporting, hobby and social clubs) where they are able to have a stall undertake a brief presentation to boost their membership base. § On the wider topic of Senior’s activities, Randwick City Library has seen great uptake in its leisure related events for seniors (including chess clubs, bridge clubs, table tennis and choir group). This change in focus of activities reflect the changing nature of libraries, moving towards that of a community hub and providing social support programs.

o Multicultural March: § In celebration of Multicultural March, Randwick City Library is holding a schedule of programs including: · Tai Chi on the Beach: Free, weekly Tai Chi classes on Maroubra Beach. · Dance workshops: Including a female-only belly dancing workshop and an all ages world dance workshop (covering samba, Greek dance, Bollywood and salsa). · Foreign film screenings: Including the Bollywood film Banjo, the French drama L’attesa (The Wait) and Spanish comedy Truman.

o Author talk highlights: § Local author, chef and culinary trainer Yoshiko Takeuchi presented her recent book Japanese Superfoods, including cooking demonstrations and tastings to an almost capacity audience on 22 February 2017. Other libraries are encouraged to contact the author’s publicist (Eisha Farrukh – eisha@cookingwithyoshiko.com / 61 (0) 435 086 658) as she is wanting to expand her tour across Sydney. § Future author talks scheduled include: · 22 March 2017: Louis Nowra - Woolloomoolloo: A Biography (NewSouth Books) · 26 April 2017: Rodney Tiffen - Disposable Leaders (NewSouth Books) · 4 May 2017: Chloe Shorten - Take Heart: A Story for Modern Stepfamilies (Melbourne University Publishing) · 11 May 2017: Jim Colman - The House That Jack Built (a biography of Jack Mundey) (NewSouth Books)

o Movie screenings: § Randwick City Library hosted food coach Vanessa Kredler, ‘That Sugar’ ambassador to hold a special film screening of That Sugar Film on Saturday 11 March. The event was incredibly well received, with the facilitated discussion after the screening highlighting compulsive eating and food addiction. Other libraries are welcome to contact the speaker who is looking to extend her tour and offer the same event to other libraries (Vanessa Kredler: info@foodfreedomcoaching.com / T: +61 498 877 404). § Moving forward, Randwick City Library will be looking to undertake movie screenings on a monthly basis, however we have identified that the ‘hook’ of the event is to have a speaker/discussion about a topic associated with the film as part of the event.

· Library outreach: o Pop-up library: § Randwick City Library continues to tour it’s pop-up library at Council key events, most recently at the Spot Festival in Randwick on Sunday 5 March. The Pop-up library is of a modular design, made up of milk crates which are held together with Velcro straps, allowing for different configurations based upon the space available. Children’s storytimes are held throughout the day, with AstroTurf, small rugs and cushions providing a welcoming and comfortable environment.

o Leveraging local shopping centres: § Randwick City Library has leveraged opportunities with local shopping centres, participating Pacific Square Shopping Centre’s (Maroubra Junction) disAbility Aware at Pacific Square to run a community outreach program, focusing on our children’s services which are appropriate for this target group. This has also served as an opportunity to build relationships for more longer term partner events to increase awareness and usage of the library (eg. School holiday programs etc).

o Summer Storytime Trail (in partnership with neighbouring library services): § In partnership with Waverley Library and Woollahra Libraries, Randwick City Library has hosted the Summer Storytime Trail, a seven stop trail of children’s activities across the eastern suburbs. Artwork for the joint program is attached.

City of Sydney · New library branding applied to brochures and newsletters · Communicating new RFID and technology upgrades at City of Sydney Library · The library’s Facebook page is to be incorporated within Council’s main Facebook page · Present a range of weekly events and programmes across the network including Tech Savvy seniors, late Night Library, 3D printer demos, story time sessions.

Wollongong City Libraries · about to launch a membership drive called “I didn’t know my library did that”. · working towards the creation of a digital learning space as the result of a grant from SLNSW. · held/are holding a range of workshops relating to sustainability and decluttering. · had music in the library on a Saturday morning in partnership with the Wollongong Conservatorium. · holding a Eurovision Trivia night in the lead up to Eurovision. · in the final stages of preparation for our annual Pop Culture Festival “Comic Gong”.

Bayside Library · Supporting a grant program called “Doing it Differently” where members of the community can apply for small grants and then partner with the library to run the program. Successful programs have been a knitting group, 4 week Photography course, and a series of life skills seminars. · Donuts and Downloads for Seniors Week (Month!) · Robotics workshops for kids have been booked out within minutes of the bookings opening
