Working Group on Multicultural Library Services (NSW) Thursday the 7th of February 2013 - Bowen Library, Randwick

MINUTES

Apologies: Wendy Ford, Vicki Smith, Annie Persijn, Anne Hall, Stephanie Lee, Roman, Yan Ping, Angela, Stella, Kaye, Pauline Chan,

Welcome: Barbara Todes, Library Manager- Randwick City Library Barbara welcomed the working group to the library and she encouraged everyone to have a look at the new renovations.

Previous Minutes Were confirmed by Kathleen Allen and seconded by Jann Debenham

Business arising from previous minutes Services/Programs Initiatives - Multicultural Activities @ your library Rosemary Worley developed a template that libraries can use to list services and programs they have introduced in their library for their CALD communities. It is hoped that this will become a method to communicate and inform other libraries about the types of services and programs that can be offered. On completion these forms should be sent to Oriana who will compile a list of all the services/programs. Libraries can use the lists to organize similar activities.

Meeting dates and venues for 2013 All meetings dates and venues have been confirmed May 9th Auburn Library August 8th State Library 7th November State Library

*Please note that the literacy meeting will be held the same day as the Multicultural Working Group meetings and the meeting on August the 8th will incorporate both the Multicultural Working Group and the Literacy meeting at the one venue.

ABS Training The State Library has a training room that can take 16 people at one time,

Action: Oriana has contacted Prue Rigg, ABS to follow up on training for public library staff .

Generic Multicultural Services Document The draft document was circulated to the working group for comment. Kathleen Allen offered to use her expertise in communications and offer her input

Action: Shauna will forward this document to Kathleen to review

Guest Speaker – Gary Paramanathan – Colourfest Film Festival Gary was unable to attend the meeting. Oriana spoke to the group about the Film Festival which is available on DVD. It consists of 9 short films and is available at a cost of $250.00 per copy. The length of all 9 films combined is one hour and it is suitable for public viewing Libraries that are interested in purchasing a copy for their library should contact Oriana. Action Oriana will contact gary to see if he will sell the DVDs at a reduced price

Strategic Plan

7 objectives were targeted at the December meeting for completion in 2013.

2012-2016 Strategic Plan – Targeted Objectives

Objective 1: To provide leadership in the field of multicultural library services Strategy: 1:To develop strategies to address identified CALD communities needs

Ageing Improved resources and services for the ageing CALD community Search for appropriate material. Allocate members of the working group to identify relevant resources in their language and communicate and report back to the working group Comprehensive list of available resources for purchase available Appoint a committee to follow up on this objective

Shauna Miller will follow up and report back to the group at the next meeting on this item

Ageing Improved resources and services for the ageing CALD community

Develop a contact list of speakers who would be available to talk to CALD groups on a variety of topics Template available on website This objective has been completed

Improve access to CALD resources Submit a proposal requesting that the State Library upgrades records in script to improve accessibility Proposal submitted

A meeting has been scheduled for 21 Nov 2012 to discuss this objective (Anne Hall)

A proposal was submitted and a meeting held to discuss this matter with Collection Services at the State Library of NSW. This matter has not progressed but Oriana will follow up on this to try and progress the matter.

Objective 2: To provide members of the group with a forum for discussion and for peer support

Strategy 1: Facilitate training and professional development

Oriana will speak to Cameron to see if funding is available to host can suggest a suitable presenter please forward their details onto Oriana. Action : Oriana will follow up on this objective

Strategy 2: Provide advice, support and information exchange opportunities

Objective 3: To raise the profile of multicultural library services

Strategy 1: Encourage and support the promotion and marketing of services for the CALD community

Outcomes Action Performance Measures Time Frame Increased access & usage by CALD communities of public library services Identify promotional opportunities & seek funding Apply for a grant to obtain funding This objective has been completed Increased CALD community awareness of public library services Encourage members to publish articles in journals and ethnic newspapers Use of E-link and a minimum of 2 articles submitted to PLN 2013 – appoint members to submit articles for PLN

Oriana suggested that the group submit an article about the grant application
