Reference and information services group meeting

City of Canada Bay Concord Library Multi-function Room 10am to 12pm.

1. Introductions

4. Did you attend the 2013 RISG Reference @ the Metcalfe Seminar?

What stood out for you as the most interesting and/or useful topic? What would you like to see discussed next year?

  • panel session about print reference – and how the interface works with electronic resources
  • how to people use the reference collection, how do you evaluate a collection which you do not lend – how does in house survey fit in? (Wollongong does in house use)
  • collection development and funding issue – what do you spend your money on and how is it split electronic and print
  • discussions of budget cuts and how the funding is redistributed
  • ebook collections for reference – who is doing and what are the options
  • research collections or reference collections – what is the difference? Waverley example rebranding and refocusing?
  • Suggestion for someone from Orange County Library Service – they are doing interesting things
  • Nearfield communication
  • Discovery layer for research purposes – guided or facilitated? Weighted and how do the results look – one search (some discussion about small multiples) – datavisualisation as a way of doing one search for discovery layer (Ken)
  • Where can money be found to do this stuff – creative funding sources
  • Google hangout for reference, Auburn has started video conferencing, Blacktown for using

5. Future reference

6. Slam the boards

Slam the boards- Any recent experiences and comments? Did you attend the "Slam the Boards! A Model for Marketing through Action" webinar on May 21? Links to the ALA presentation which give a good overview of Slam the boards are available at http://ala13.ala.org/node/10999 (this link is no longer working)

7. New resources for reference and information services

- what are your favourites? Did you trial an online service (e.g. Beamafilm - Australian documentaries on demand)? And how are you evaluating them?

  • Beamafilm (Randwick)– www.beamafilm.com – Australian documentaries, streaming online (some from other countries as well), useful for video reference, (find the NSW,net form for evaluation and ask Ross about individual libraries using it), used standard evaluation form and had several staff evaluate
  • Muzzi languages for children, Britannica smart maths,
  • Studyladder – maths and English – is in schools, so maybe not needed in libraries
  • Clarity English
  • Literacy planet
  • Ancestry library and Find my past (popular)
  • Facts on file – online (very popular database at Auburn, and well use at Burwood)
  • Elibrary Australasia – Proquest, good for topic overviews
  • Zineo (a few libraries subscribed). http://au.zinio.com Ryde to share their help instruction
  • Free documentaries website http://www.freedocumentaries.org/
  • Form Randwick uses to evaluation is added as an attachment at the end of this page (Online service evaluation form).

(Note from after the meeting : When there are databases of interest which you find out about, make sure you contact Ross Baharrie at NSW.net about them, and consortia purchases may be possible.)

8. Discussion about ideal reference desk - is it mobile, or is a fixed desk still useful?

Look at examples from Altona North with a service desk on wheels so it can be moved around to the best location at the time. The University of Tasmania also has service desks on wheels and it works really well for them, a service desk with small footprint , Wyndham Vale Library had this - and it was designed for the client to stand next to the staff member so they could both look at the screen together, this is a double sided desk - again where clients and staff can staff shoulder to shoulder, Kelvin Grove Library at QUT - and it makes it easy for clients and staff to share the one screen - so everyone knows what it s going on, and examples from library suppliers. Any other examples you want to suggest?

  • Being able to crowded around – and shared
  • Screen size has to be approachable, and shiftable
  • Desk/service point is small, open, able to walked behind,
  • Tablets for roving
  • Staff standing up so they can rove – no “position of power” still may need a chair, or a could of higher chairs so client can sit with you
  • Desk has to work with roving
  • Need space to put small amount of forms, phone caddy etc (small space)

  • PLWG NSW.net eResources Tool Kit Working Group (this link no longer works)
  • Blacktown asking about lending tablets – Albury, Canterbury, and Wagga Wagga suggested as contacts who have been doing this
  • E-lending seminar in September
  • Research project proposal – around datavisualisation and catalogue/database discovery, looking at catalogue and databases, how does rda effect, Deborah, Andrew, Sean, Ken

10. Next meeting date and location.

The next meeting will be at Lithgow in November. This will combine a meeting and a workship. Please suggest ideas for the workshop via the reference email list.
