3. Welcome & Matters arising from previous Minutes

Welcome by Shoba Abraham, Team Leader - Customs House Library.

The last Meeting was on 26 March and was devoted to training those attending on the use of Beta Wiki. Many of the documents from the former wiki were moved to the Beta Wiki, but some of the links are broken, so have to be fixed.

4. Strategic Plan Updating

We devoted much of the time at the meeting working through the strategic plan. We decided it was too complex and we needed to simplify it by taking out excess detail like the SWOT Analysis and reviewing the objectives so that they are clearly stated and achievable within our limited resources. The group can be more effective by having an up to date wiki that allows different public libraries to contribute resource lists, collection policies, supplier lists, program outlines, etc. It is also more useful to regional libraries who don’t have the resources to send staff to Sydney for a 2 hour meeting each quarter and it allows the group to access information on their programs, collections and experience. Comments on the strategic plan had been invited before the meeting and will continue to be accepted until Friday 16 August. The Draft of the Strategic plan will be available for comment on the wiki on Friday 23 August for final comment.

5. Seminar Planning

It is too late to plan for a Seminar this year, but we will investigate combining with another Working Group to run a seminar next year. This will also allow more time to plan an effective event. The priority for this year is to update the Strategic Plan and Wiki, and raise the profile of the Literacy Working Group.

6. Wiki Updating – Resources page needs refreshing

Most of the resources from the previous wiki have been moved to Beta Wiki, but some of the links need to be fixed. Abir will try to update the Minutes on the wiki. Jacinta will send out a “How to update the Wiki” document. We need to:

  1. update the resources list and add new resources from the last 2 years identifying the most useful ones (by loans).
  2. add lists of suppliers of literacy resources (e.g. Abbey’s, Bridge Book Shop, Kinokuniya, Bennetts, Caval, Bookery, AMES
  3. Ask Reading Writing Hotlone for lists
  4. Ordered List Item
  5. Kasia pointed out that Queensland and Victoria have developed structured programs for literacy and have action plans. The link to the State Library of Victoria Reading and Literacy Strategic Framework

7. Sharing Professional Reading

It was suggested that we should add links to interesting articles to the wiki as we see them.

8. State Library Representative Report

Kate O’Grady was unable to attend this meeting, but Jacinta thanked her for her continual support and direction.

9.Other business

Next Meeting: 2 to 4.30pm Tuesday 29 October 2019 at SLNSW
