9. Libraries Australia/LADD issues

The issue of searching Libraries Australia more effectively was raised. It was suggested that there are two ways to go about getting more accurate results:

  1. By libraries keeping their holdings up-to-date on Libraries Australia.
  2. By libraries keeping their holdings up-to-date on their own catalogues and allowing Libraries Australia to link directly to items listed. Deep Linking allows you to click on a hyperlink in Libraries Australia and you are taken to that item via the library’s OPAC. If a library has not opted for Deep Linking, you will instead be taken to their catalogue to undertake the search or that item again.

Oftentimes, libraries opt not to set up Deep Linking as their IT sections are wary of it and consider that it may potentially be a security threat. Generally, Deep Linking needs to be authorised by management and a Request for Deep Linking form submitted with Libraries Australia. You also require an entry in the Australian Libraries Gateway (ALG) and the InterLibrary Resource Sharing Directory (ILRS). For more information please refer to https://www.nla.gov.au/librariesaustralia/deep-linking.

Currently, Libraries Australia has a backlog of library holdings to update due to the effects of library amalgamations over the past couple of years.

Georges River NUC code. Currently, holdings on Libraries Australia for Georges River include NUC codes for both Hurstville (NHUR) and Kogarah (NKOG). Eventually this will change to the single NUC code - NHUR.

Please remember to suspend your library’s ILL service on LADD and the ILRS (for those libraries that don’t use LADD) over the Christmas/New Year period.

10. Suggested topics for discussion

Library closures

  • Ryde Library Service’s ILLs will be up and running again from 9/12/19. They have had a refurbishment with the configuring of the library space and new furniture.
  • Strathfield Library will be completely closed from 20/12/19 and re-opening sometime in March 2020. This is due to a total refurbishment – the shell of the building will be kept but the internal space will be redesigned by the same architects who created the new Green Square Library.
  • Burwood Library will close completely from 2/12/19 and re-open April/May 2020. Their whole collection is in storage and the refurbishment will result in a single building for both the library and Council.

The issue of the return labels for bulk loans was raised. They are difficult to peel and staff at the State Library have raised this with their manager – this concern has been discussed but it basically comes down to Australia Post.

11. Amalgamation updates
NIL

12. General Business

  • RFID tags in bulk loan items. A concern was raised regarding the possibility of the State Library attaching RFID tags to bulk loan items which would cause problems for libraries with existing RDIF technology. Britta, from Multicultural Services, is not aware of any changes being made in this regard but will raise the issue with Oriana to confirm. More likely, the problem is that other libraries are attaching their own RFID tags in the books or leaving them in the pockets and this is causing problems with the checking out of items for the following library. Could libraries please remove any RFID tags they may be attaching to these books prior to returning them.
  • John, Canada Bay Library, mentioned that next year the library will undergo a refurbishment. Changes include the Concierge desk model, which is in contrast to a main desk and consists of a small free-standing desk with a button customers can press for assistance.
  • The venue for the Document Delivery Sub-committee meetings in 2020 is yet to be determined as the Unaipon Room we were using has been converted into staff offices. Venue to be confirmed at the next meeting.
  • A big thank you to Anne Laidlaw for hosting our meeting at Green Square Library, arranging a tour and providing us with a lovely afternoon tea accompanied by Christmas crackers.
