Matters Arising

IFLA 2010 changes update– Sydney

In July 2009, it was announced that the 2010 Brisbane IFLA conference would be cancelled and consequently the proposed Satellite Multicultural meeting to be held in Sydney would be cancelled. However, planning for the arrangement for the Satellite Multicultural meeting are still available. This presented an opportunity for the State Library of New South Wales in partnership with Mylanguage consortium to host the National Multicultural Conference. Proposal was sent to PLS. by Oriana on behalf of the Mylanguage consortium.

Mylanguage website Sheets of suggested changes of the website were distributed to members in the previous meeting. Oriana encouraged members to provide any interesting and useful websites in other languages for the website. The State Library of NSW is doing a planning for the next 5 years.

CRC 2009 National Marketing Award The State Library of NSW and the Group joined together and put an entry on the Multilingual Glossary into the 2009 National Marketing Award.

Multicultural marketing Conference Oriana presented a talk on the marketing on Mylanguage in the Conference on 26 August.

Update of Public Library Flyer from State Library of NSW Oriana asked members to check and have a look at the Public Library flyer (English version) and suggest any changes. The flyer will then be translated into 34 languages and available on the website. Individual library can download them and change to their own name and logo. Suggestions can be sent to Oriana by 4 September.

San Felipe – Donation Oriana showed the members some pictures of the small town, San Felipe in Chile. Donation of books and AV materials to the libraries in San Felipe for the Palestinian refugees and a small Chinese community would be welcome.

Community Quality Use of Medicines Jackie Stephenson worked for National Prescribing Service Limited (NPS) which worked together with the Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia to promote the safe and wise use of medicines with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. She talked to the members about their services as well as introducing different free resources, e.g. brochures, fact sheets, presentation packs and ESL kit. Members could order these free resources on http://www.nps.org.au/consumers/order_free_information/order_now .

A link of the website to Mylanguage was suggested.

Welcome Banner A welcome banner in 16 languages is available for loan.

State Library of NSW ILL Bulk Loan Statistics Oriana had sent out an email to members concerning the loan figures of the ILL Bulk Loan from the State Library of NSW. Members were suggested to provide the actual figures of the items loaned out to the customers. The service was under review. A new ILL Bulk Loan box was designed and used to send items to the requesting libraries. It is now working very efficiently.

Research History Project Oriana would check if the Working Group started in 1975. A grant application on “history project on multicultural library services in NSW” was suggested to submit in next year. A history book recently published by the Country Library and the entry from last year could be used for reference. Both digital and printed formats would be considered. The entry needed to be submitted by a library on behalf of the Working Group.

The scope and funding of the Multicultural Library Services History have been investigating during 2009. Rosemary Worley, from Wollongong Library would attend a meeting with Michael Jacklin, a PHD student and researcher at Wollongong University, on 27 October.

Action: Dimitri will provide Oriana with a list of people that may be of interest to be interviewed for the project. Rosemary and Anne Hall will provide names to add to the list and Oriana will identify and list the State Library Files of interest.

Living Library Promotion Banner Wendy Gindi suggested creating a promotion banner for “Living Library”. Oriana would seek funding for the banner.
