Matters Arising

Cataloguing in Scripts Marrickville Library has cataloguing records with script in Arabic, Chinese, Greek and Vietnamese. Preparation work for contributing these records to Libraries Australia was in process.

Botany Library keeps cataloguing records with script in 13 languages. Their system will be changed and cataloguing outsourcing will begin in May. Technical problems need to be sorted before contributing these records to Libraries Australia.

Intercultural Communication & Interaction Training Two training sessions will be organised in May 2009. Oriana will email details of the training sessions to members. Bookings are essential. The sessions are free but if booked and not turned up, a fine of $200 may be charged.

Tuesday, 12 May 2009—on “Develop Cultural Competence” for experienced people (12 people) Wednesday, 13 May 2009—on “Enhancing Cultural Awareness & Understanding” for anyone (20 people)

History Project (Oriana) Noel and Oriana will continue to work on the scope and identify any issues before the submission of an application this year. The scope to be set includes level, target readers, format and so on. Members are welcome to give suggestions to the project to Noel or Oriana.

General Business

Member List Update Shauna distributed a list to members for updating their contact details.

Review and Promotion of Multilingual Glossary http://www2.sl.nsw.gov.au/multicultural/glossary/ Noel reported that the database had not been heavily used. He encouraged libraries to use, test and promote it regularly as it is easy to use. Any comments and suggestions on the database, e.g. new phrases adding and phrases deleting, should be sent to Noel by 1 May 2009. He will collect all the comments and suggestions for discussion in the next meeting.

Multicultural Topics for IFLA 2010 Satellite Conference Jane sent out an email on the topics for the IFLA 2010 Satellite Conference. The theme of the conference is to explore the impact of libraries on culturally diverse communities. Other suggested topics include 1. Programmes targeting sections of culturally diverse communities, aging, children, special needs and refugees 2. Promotions and marketing 3. Co-operative ventures 4. Technology / web 2.0 Research papers are called for the conference. Any comments and suggestions on the conference can be sent to Jane.

LOTE Libraries Direct Ms Poonam from LOTE Libraries Direct, a book supplier, talked to the members their services available to the libraries.

Updating of the IFLA 2010 Satellite Conference and Calling for Volunteers The IFLA 2010 Satellite Conference will be held from 11 to 13 August 2010 in Sydney.

Tue, 10 Aug – two bus trips will be organised (1) City–>Blacktown–>Liverpool–>Cabramatta (2) City–>Canterbury–>Ashfield–>Concord – Welcome drinks at Mitchell Foyer

Wed, 11 Aug – Opening at Parliament House, Conference dinner at Novotel Hotel Sponsors will be sought from suppliers and services providers e.g. Zenith

Thur, 12 Aug – closing by 4pm

Volunteers for the Conference are needed. If anyone who are interested in volunteering in the Conference, please email Oriana.

Cataloguing with Script for the State Library 2009/2010 Oriana reported that minimal level of catalogue records for Chinese, Japanese and Korean fiction books will be emphasised in their catalogue. She will write a paper on the issue.

Selection Meetings 2009 Shauna sent out a form to all members on the selection meetings 2009. Four meetings will be held in Marrickville Library. The form should be returned to Shauna. 1. Chinese 2. Arabic 3. Croatian, Greek, Spanish and Italian 4. Korean and Japanese

A pre-selection meeting will also be organised. Suppliers will be invited to attend the meeting. Any comments, suggestions and questions for discussion in the meeting can be sent to Shauna.

Shauna will also email out a form to members. If anyone cannot come to select the book, they can fill in the form and she can select on behalf of their library. She will try to select the books as close to the suggested budget as possible. Any good ideas of how to do this can be sent to Shauna.

Co-operative Purchasing – Spanish Language Materials It has been noticed that not many Spanish book suppliers can provide up-to-date titles in the selection meeting. Oriana has found a book supplier in Argentina that may offer competitive price. She suggested inviting libraries to a meeting to talk about cooperative purchasing if that supplier can offer competitive price. That supplier required paying by credit card in advance and the State Library can arrange for it.

Bulk Loan Review Oriana reported that the review involved different aspects such as 1. Serious communication problem 2. New policy: what to purchase for the collections

Once the reported is finished, comments are welcome

Interfiling Junior Non-fiction with Adult Non-fiction in Community Language Collections Katherine asked for the opinions on interfiling junior non-fiction with adult non-fiction in community language collections. Members concluded that if the purpose of doing so was to increase the usage of the junior non-fiction, she could think of any other way to address the problem, e.g. survey.

Book Donation to Library, NSW Dept of Corrective Services Any good books (must be in good physical condition) your library does not need can be donated to Ron Woodham Library, Metropolitan Remand & Reception Centre.
