Minutes of the Working Group on Multicultural Services Quarterly Meeting held on Thursday, the 25th February 2010 at Manly Library

Welcome Vicky Smith, Manager of Manly City Library, welcomed everyone to the Library.

Chairman Jane Greville was absent and Shauna Miller chaired the meeting.

Minutes of Previous meeting The minutes were accepted by Victoria Scarf and seconded by Jann Debenham.

Matters Arising

Multicultural Excellence Award (MEA) Pauline Chan, Wanda Swiercznska and Vivien Chung volunteered to become members of the MEA committee. The main duty of this committee is to suggest at least 5 nominations for the Award for both categories Individual and Organisation. The length of the term of this committee is 1 year.

Living Library Promotional Banner Oriana reported that the National Library might include the Living Library Banner in its promotional program. Action: Oriana will report back at the next meeting.

MyLanguage National Conference 2010 The fee for the Conference (including dinner) will be set. Discount for early bird registration and library students is available. Oriana has invited library book suppliers and cataloguing agents to be sponsors for the Conference. There are different sponsorship categories ($6000, $3000, $1000 and $500) with different level of promotional opportunities in the Conference were set. Positive feedback from some suppliers was received. The Commonwealth Bank, AMES, Australian Community Languages (ACL), and cultural associations (e.g. Co.As.It) will also be approached as potential sponsors. Any further suggestions on the potential sponsoring units should be directed to Oriana.

Multilingual Glossary Committee Jann Debenham, Noel Willis and Joelmon Zungar formed this committee to review the Multilingual Glossary database, including terms to be added/deleted, problems discovered, finding grants for future maintenance. Action:The Committee will prepare a report at the end of the year and present to the working group.

Library Promotion Banner Review Revision of the usage of the banners, such as which languages were mostly used, will be made. Action: Jacinta Craine will assist in this survey and report any results at the next meeting.

Update of Library Flyer Oriana reported that the project has finished.

History of the Working Group Project Action: Anne Hall will contact the Library Science Department, Charles Stuart University and Oriana will contact the Library & Information Knowledge Management Department, University of Technology Sydney to see if their students (PH D or Master degree) are interested in the project.

Travelling Exhibition Anne Hall suggested setting up a travelling exhibition on Islamic arts and culture like the one in Norway. A grant was suggested to pay for the costs of establishing the exhibition. Action: Anne will contact the lady who was responsible for the exhibition project in Norway for reference to estimate the cost and report it in the next meeting. Wendy Ford will assist Anne.

Development of Multilingual Book Club Acquisition & Program Oriana suggested applying for a grant to purchase materials for libraries which run book clubs as many book club members expressed that getting books for the book club through ILL will take a lot of time. Those libraries running book clubs were encouraged to write an article for the Public Library News.

Report on the Cooperative & How the Cataloguing is going Shauna reported that Chinese books selected in the last selection meeting were sent to Zenith for cataloguing. She will prepare a form for the libraries to give their feedback on the selection meeting. The form will include items such as quality & cost of the materials, and variety of themes on spot. Any suggestion on the feedback form, please send them to Shauna. She will compile the suggestions and feedback and send them to the suppliers for the improvement of the selection meetings to be held in the next financial year.

The dates for the selection meetings in the financial year 2010-1011 are as follows: 19 July=⇒Arabic 26 July=⇒Greek, Italian, Spanish and Croatian 2 Aug=⇒Korean and Vietnamese 12 Aug=⇒Chinese

Meeting closed at 2:45pm and was followed by a library tour.
