Matters Arising

Multicultural Glossary Oriana advised that funding is available to pay for the glossary. The group has received $37,000.00 although there is a larger cost which the State Library of NSW will pay for. Also the State Library will host the database

E-translate will do the translations. Oriana has looked at the database and is happy with it .

Oriana also noted that some terms and or words in English do not exist in other languages. If this is the case it will be noted as Non Applicable. (N/A)

My Language www.mylanguage.com.au CASL has taken this up and a working group is looking at it. The idea is that anyone will be able to search in their language and locate information in two sections, one for the public and one for librarians. This project has to be sustainable which means that there needs to be a company who can oversee the progress and check on ongoing needs. If you have any comments or suggestions please send them to Oriana Oacevedo@sl.nsw.gov.au and she will pass them on.

ACTIONS

Oriana would like the group to look at the database and please send her any comments or suggestions

Send a progress report re the glossary to Library Managers

Also investigate the launch of the glossary when its ready

Oriana suggested that this group look at the sites and make recommendations

1.Multicultural Website

Shauna advised that both herself and Oriana are looking at the State Library of NSW website and will be adding a new page dedicated to the Multicultural Cooperative. It will list the selection meeting dates, suppliers information etc.

2.SBS Radio

Oriana suggested that in the near future we should discuss a new approach to the promotion of library services including using the media such as SBS Radio.

New Business

3.Vietnamese Community – Wendy Gindi

Wendy Gindi commented on a recent exhibition, at Canterbury Library for the Vietnamese Community. Approximately 150 came to the exhibition but they were not happy with the books that had been purchased for the Vietnamese community. They said they will boycott the material. The community seems to only want material published before 1975, if it’s published in Vietnam or after 1975 if it’s published overseas. The group discussed the issue further, Patou said Marrickville doesn’t have this problem and perhaps it is a minority within the Vietnamese community causing the problem. Anne Hall suggested that libraries have to support all sides of the community and it is not the job of libraries to censor material.

4.Tagalog – Anne Hall

Anne advised that the language known as Tagalog should be changed to Pilipino as this is know recognised as the official language of the Phillipines.

5.Conferences - Oriana

Oriana suggested that more members of the Working group should attend conferences to promote the group. WE have developed a presentation that could easily be adapted

6.Strategic Plan - all

The remainder of the meeting was spent discussing the new Strategic Plan.

Meeting finished 2:30pm

Next Meeting will be held on the 1st of December, McDonalds Room, State Library of NSW starting at 10:00am – 4:00pm
