Afternoon session:
4. Ebooks and materials advisory:
Issues?
- Ebooks very popular across all libraries holding a collection.
- Useful to check before suggesting ILLs.
- Blacktown lend sony ebook readers already loaded with content.
How can we work with the Australian Romance Readers Association?
- They are running a comp later this year to engage new members.
- How can we engage with other niche readers groups?
- Should we engage?
- Suggestion that we do a blog post in a month or two (need to see which month would suit best) to promote this competition.
- Libraries and /or individuals can register on the website for more information about the competition.
- How to find other niche groups?
- Suggest we create a page on the RA wiki to record groups as we find them - WHO DO YOU KNOW?
- Helen to email PLN for information from other library staff.
- These groups may then be approached to write a guest blog on Read Watch Play in a suitable month in 2014. * Should we engage? Yes, it allows people to connect with other people and that’s important.
5.How is your library using the themes for the twitter reading group?
Parramatta is using Pinterest.
Other libraries including Blue Mountains and Wingecarribee are using the themes for in house library displays, bookmarks, blog posts, author talks and twitter posts. Individual Hawkesbury staff have each chosen one month that will be theirs to promote, organize relevant displays etc.
Hootesuite for your tweets and facebook:
Hootesuite is free software that works with GooglePlus, facebook and twitter. It allows you create tweets and posts and schedule them for automatic posting. When scheduling a post for the first of the month, link it to the appropriate month descriptions already on the Read Watch Play blog. Hootesuite is easy to join, easy to use. Ellen suggested tweeting later in the afternoon has more impact than first thing in the morning.
6. Adult non-fiction stock quality health check:
Ellen is looking for volunteers for the steering committee. The committee will be collating non-fiction titles across a to be determined selection of genres. The collection will eventually be narrowed to 500 titles to be checked in public libraries. It is expected to start in late July and be available for public library staff in November. If you are interested, please email Ellen Forsyth or Leanne Perry at SLNSW.
7. 23 mobile things.
What is this? How can it work for RA in your library? This is like Learning 2.0 but for mobile devices. Tasks are fairly easy and fast to complete. Mobile devices can complement other technology used in the library. Learning tasks could also be run as a small group discussion using library devices.
8. Updating the reading lists on the RA wiki:
The existing bookmarks are in need of an update. We have had volunteers to update the following:
- Authors to Glom – Therese and Vassiliki
- Australian literature - Therese
- Medieval mysteries – Ellen Suzanne from Parramatta will also update some.
If you would also like to help please “apply to be a writer” if you aren’t already and choose a list. Please format the author’s name as per the medieval mysteries list.
9. General business
- There were more enquiries on how to organize book clubs. Melanie Mutch from Waringah has offered to update the book clubs page on the RA wiki.
- The suggestion was made to use the PLN Reference list as a forum for discussion. More information about Waringah Library’s book clubs is available here.
- Research will start into the feasibility of funding for a project to create book club connections throughout NSW.
- General enquiry from Helen, Wingecarribee about the types of photocopiers other libraries are using as our coin operated one needs replacing. Various systems are in use, most have money loaded onto individual library cards and there are positives and negatives with all systems, especially for the occasional, non-library member users and card that lose their magnetic strip (and also lose any money attached to them).
- Photo apps for phones –suggestion that photo apps can be useful for library marketing and displays. Photocam has great effects and is easy to use.
