Welcome, introductions and apologies

General Business:

1. Business arising from previous minutes (27 August 2012) November 2012 meeting cancelled Business arising was discussed at agenda points

2. Working Group Barbara welcomed as the new library manager for the Group. Barbara spoke about the possibility of the Group working on a media campaign, along the lines of the successful Multicultural campaign of several years ago but using social media – Facebook / Twitter etc. The aim is to ‘update’ the perceptions of libraries amongst non-users. Campaigns could feature e.g. someone using their smart phone to look up something on a library website/database; or reading an ebook borrowed from the library etc How will it work? What will it cost? Possibility of cinema advertising. Could use students (TAFE, Uni of Western Sydney etc) to produce video footage. Is it possible for the Group to have its own Facebook or Twitter account? Or better to be a Public Libraries NSW connection? Some other suggestions – have Libraries as the theme for a future Tropfest; crowd funding for the video (using Pozible or Kickstarter); work with ALIA/MPLA/Public Libraries NSW /Public Libraries Australia ion a coordinated campaign; underpinned by a membership drive?

ACTION: Victoria to raise with Sue McKerracher (ALIA). Further discussion at next meeting to prepare a motion for the next AGM of the associations?

Victoria is drafting a strategic plan for the Group to discuss at the May meeting. Issues such as designating a formal chairperson and secretary and housekeeping issues will also be discussed.

3. Marketing Awards The Marketing Awards for 2012 were presented at the National Year of Reading closing event at Blacktown Library on the 16th November. Very successful event – Raeco presented an additional prize on the day.

Call for applications for the 2013 Awards will be made in July / August with the closing date for entries being early October. The Awards will be presented at the Switch Conference in Sydney in November. Sponsorship needs to be formalised and expanded.

ACTION: Karen to discuss possible sponsors with Victoria (based on the Switch exhibitors). Rosemary to assist with admin etc for the Awards.

4. Marketing Ref-Ex We are still waiting for a formal letter from Ohio about our ‘re-badging’ of the Marketing Plan from their website. Some modification may need to be made to the modules to make them relevant to our local environment.

5. Future meetings / workshops Suggestion to hold a workshop on creating a marketing plan; with emphasis on social media

ACTION: Victoria to investigate potential speakers

6. Information Exchange

Parramatta Promoting their e-resources at schools and at storytime. Using vendors’ promotional material; use of QR codes

Ryde Thanks to Kim for the following (emailed after the meeting) Regarding our discussion at the meeting on Monday about marketing libraries using youtube and short videos, one of my colleagues sent me this blog about an ad developed by Oklahoma Metropolitan Library Service, targeting 18-30 year olds with e-readers. Ok, this one was a TV ad but the idea is similar so thought it worth sharing.
