Matters arising – Islamic Art Exhibition, no progress. Draft strategic plan, on agenda Road to IELTS – Jann Debenham & Wendy Ford Jann and Wendy demonstrated the Road to IELTS program. Bankstown Library members can access the program in the library or at home using their library card number. Licence for 10 academic and 10 general users. The program helps users to prepare for their IELTS exams with the Academic module the most popular. Feedback icon helps students with their answers. Bankstown also subscribes to Active reading and study skills success programs. Manly Library statistics show that in the last 4 months there have been 162 academic sessions, 330 courses run and 126 hours of use. Manly Library advertises through the local language schools to promote it. Wendy also reported that Manly Library are about to go live with Byki Online, an online language learning program.
Action: Jann and Wendy to write an article for PLN to show the SLNW that public libraries share news. They will include a list of libraries that already subscribe.
Multicultural Excellence Awards – Oriana Acevedo Oriana encourages libraries to enter. She used the laptop loan scheme run by Blacktown, a high immigrant area as an example. Even though the program is not run by Multicultural Librarian it is an example of multicultural excellence. Look at what else is happening in your library that benefits the multicultural community. Oriana would like commitment from members to submit entries. Entries must be received by COB Friday 21st October 2011. Marketing Campaign – Oriana Acevedo Ten years ago the working group received a grant of $70,000 to promote public libraries and books in other languages. The campaign included billboards, advertising on buses and postcards with the messages, Go to your local library, learn English, access to internet, and read in your language. It is time to work on a second promotional campaign to increase awareness once again. Oriana proposed that a committee be formed to work out how that campaign should be run, what languages to target, what the message is and which regions. The goal is to apply for grant money in 2012. Action: Oriana to email for volunteers for committee (4) to co-ordinate the project. Team to be in place for November 2011 meeting. Bulk Loan Statistics – Oriana Acevedo
In previous years SLNSW has counted the number of items sent out but didn’t know the circulation of items once they reached the public library. From 2011 public libraries are required to collect statistics on bulk loans of multicultural material from SLNSW. Statistics will be collected for the first time in June 2012 for inclusion in Bibliostat. The policy in regards to lost items is currently being rewritten. Lost items will be taken on a case by case basis with hardship taken into account. Each library’s account record is being cleaned up.
Draft Letter re cataloguing records in script for SLNSW material. The new State Librarian, Dr Alex Byrne is starting soon. This is a good opportunity to get him on board and send a letter to ask State Library to lead by example and catalogue LOTE material in script.
Action: Anne Hall on behalf of public libraries will write a draft letter asking State Library to catalogue LOTE material in script.
Multicultural Health Week 2011
Multicultural Health week will be launched at the State Library on 5th September 2011. We provide access to information. The Multicultural Health communication service is helping build up access to this information. The partnership is a 2 year commitment with the MHCS and Mylanguage as point of access. Marrickville and Fairfield are the pilot libraries and will have folders produced in different languages with leaflets dealing with different health issues. The State Library can provide a health collection bulk loan and accompanying folder with leaflets and information about how to access more information in their language plus websites. Programs about health will also be run. Evaluation forms in relevant languages will be available asking how old are you, did you find this information helpful, etc. To encourage people to fill in the evaluation form and return it to a librarian a gift will be offered.
Action: Oriana will email covers for folders in languages as requested by libraries.
My Language Update The My Language website will be updated in September. Health will feature prominently on website
Multilingual Glossary The update of the Multilingual Glossary has been completed, added health information in all the languages.
E-books in languages A number of libraries have asked about ebooks in other languages. It has been difficult to find a supplier in Europe that gives access to books that can be loaned. So far e-libraries have been established for English but not other languages. At the moment DRM means you cannot loan them multiple times. E-books are not widely available in LOTE yet and it may be a couple of years before they catch up.
Myloans Please use myloans for all bulk loan requests etc.
Multicultural Cooperative Selection Meetings The selection meetings for the Multicultural Cooperative have been held. Thanks to Wendy Gindi for assisting with selections and helping selectors choose. Shauna and the team have tried to reduce duplicates and the number of duplicate copies are better this year. Most of the invoices have been received from suppliers and Shauna will send info to relevant libraries. Please email Shauna address details, requirement of purchase orders numbers. Local Government Procurement – LOTE is not part of LGP, Shauna has been in contact with Angela Tesoriero from LGP over the years but they have decided it is too complicated and LGP are happy to leave supply of LOTE material to the Co-operative.
Action: Shauna to email Victoria e-copy for attachment to minutes.
Better Chinese: Learning Chinese through stories is a new supplier. They have resources for encouraging the learning of Chinese language and culture. Some bilingual material,
Action: Shauna will pass on contact details.
Draft Strategic Plan 2012-2016 Action: Shauna to check that suggestions from May meeting was included in the Draft and updated. To be resent to members before November 2011 meeting. Shauna to call for agenda items for next meeting.
Other Business Kemal Serdar – Children left in library, other libraries policy please email to Kemal. Kathy Yang – Ebooks in language, co-operative opportunity. Way of the future. National Library has chinese e-books available Wendy Gindi – Bolinda Books collection launched, Bolinda books considering moving into that area. Phil Walshe, Managing Director. Online subscription for audio books. Maybe libraries need to approach a company such as Bolinda and we drive the progress.
Thank you Kemal and Auburn Library for hosting the meeting.
Next Meeting: Thursday 17th November 2011 at State Library.
