Multicultural Marketing Campaign Oriana to update on progress.

Grant Report Progress Oriana and Noel currently working on the campaign around the theme of “Your public library welcomes you” (not Welcome to your public library).

Radio promotion Mirjana and Oriana spoke about using SBS radio as a way of promoting multicultural services through interviews and notices. They will develop a template that libraries can use.

Oriana to send out Report on Demand from the ABS where the newly arrived groups of people are living.

Mirjana also spoke about using Country Education Profile to help users.

Small Project : Sharing songs and rhymes A Canadian library is collecting videos of songs and rhymes in different languages. Around November, Oriana will contact libraries looking for anyone (not necessarily library staff) who knows appropriate songs and rhymes and is prepared to be filmed performing them to go on the website.

Cervantes Institute – Audiobooks The Cervantes Institute has audio books in Spanish available for download for free. Libraries can request access codes to allow patrons to do this themselves, each access code will allow 2 downloads per audiobook. A link will be posted on the State library website and a set of instructions developed by Oriana and Abby to make it easy to navigate the website as it is primarily in Spanish. Oriana will email when it is ready to go.

My Language Conference Oriana spoke about the MyLanguage conference in Brisbane and gave a brief overview of some of the speakers including the fantastic Cherokee Indian presentation on the use of technology to revive their language and to grow interest in it. There was also a presentation by Anne Hall and Germana Morassi regarding the Multicultural Health Project, Oriana distributed the accompanying USB with the presentation on it to Working Group members present, and has more for those who were unable to attend _CHECK?

She reiterated that libraries and communities should use the What’s On feature of the MyLanguage website and gave an example of a group in Liverpool who used it to advertise their jewellery making class.

She also announced the Wilbur DVD initiative between My Language and the Little Book Club. See the press release from the Little Book Club here: http://www.thelittlebigbookclub.com.au/sites/thelittlebigbookclub.com.au/files/news/files/wilbur_multilingual_video__audio_resources_launch_media_release_final.pdf The DVD is a series of book readings available to watch and listen to in 14 different languages including: Somali, Tamil, Burmese, Persian-Farsi, Dinka, Hindi, Khmer, Nuer, Amharic, Chinese, Arabic, Vietnamese, French and English.

Oriana has acquired 500 copies to give FREE to every public library, central and branch. She will shortly send an email asking libraries to let her know if they DO NOT want it, and the remainder will be available to distribute to community groups or to have multiple copies in your library. Shauna will organise cataloguing through the co-op.

Noel also reported back on the conference, with specific highlights the Cherokee presentation, the Brisbane City Libraries presentation and also that by Alice Springs. See the full programme here for more details: http://www.mylanguage.gov.au/images/mylanguage%20conference%20program.pdf and make sure to check out the papers once online.

Oriana raised a suggestion to include the list of available languages for use in public libraries on the joining form for new members. She will get in touch with managers to get a feel for this.
