3. Report from people who attended the reference seminar

what action have you taken from the ideas on that day? tweet stream from day Queensland Rail use of social media as lasting impression, liked the responsiveness, the conversation elements of State Rail. Good feedback about the day. Good to hear about changes from Wikipedia. Roving inspiration from UNSW. Different abilities to be able to use social media in organizations because of organisational constraints. Some libraries will be implementing social media soon. Rod McGuinness great use of tools. Working through the use of storify. Possible local studies collection of the tweets on the day of the local government elections. Capturing the community events as a snapshot of the community. Showing where the links to the seminar are as well on the RISG wiki.

Discussion about using storify to bring together tweets about a subject. Jennifer provided a run through of storify.

4 Report from people who followed or attended the ALIA Biennial conference

what discovery ideas for reference were there? conference blog

Tom Ruthven, mobile users and discovery. The mobile world, there is the world where the stuff comes to where you are in a fixed location, or mobile where the stuff comes to wherever you are. Emerging uses of datamining, new tool from CSIRO which will be one to watch for. Bringing connections together through different means of data mining. Behaviour and usage patterns change, expanding and interconnections. Enjoyed the authors panel, enjoyed the diversity of program, the writing program at Orange, the reading with dads literacy programs with prisons, technology often seems difficult. Discussion about ebooks from authors, ebooks/treebooks, Usability discussion about reference resources

5. How are you using the RISG wiki, risg blog and risg new technology blog

Blog as great place to ask questions, and someone else will answer it. Public discussion of reference ideas and technology ideas.

6. Slam the boards

can be used as a reference training exercise to encourage staff to explore different ways of answering queries and working on skills, time as a major factor. Depends which types of questions you answer, so you may want to direct where the questions are sought from, for greater effectiveness for training. Need to make sure that you are effective in use of time as can spend all the time looking for questions. Answer boards are the only opportunity to pick and choose customers, in library need to help everyone. Good training tool for a quiet shift on reference.

Discussion about email queries. Local studies seems to be a good fit for email queries, hard to do a reference query through email. Some libraries finding local studies queries coming through blog comments/questions as well.

One library asking people to record reference/readers advisory questions which had end of month summary with some other suggested tool, and a way of sharing the knowledge (incentive helped). Way of helping with induction for new staff as well.

7 New resources for reference and information services

  • · Canada Bay using six ipads for roving reference, not everyone is keen on using the roving tools. Have training in the roving and the use of ipads. Have shortcuts for library catalogue, goodreading, various search tools, mobile device for setting up pin for clients, using free apps
  • · Hornsby having a focus on training staff on databases training, using a subject approach to database training. Has meant the staff are much more comfortable with using the databases. The information services staff are providing the training, and this has increased their skills too.
  • · Discussion about reduction in print reference resources
  • · Willoughby Library taking Ebsco host training to schools, and the app which goes with that, this has been going well. Working with school library staff, long lead time (like planning at least a term ahead). Has shown increased used of Ebsco databases, have been going to schools
  • · Other libraries having successful interactions with schools, and having word of mouth between schools (very mixed from library to library), other examples have the schools coming to the library
  • · ANZ info the translation of full text is a bonus, all the full text are translatable into about 30 languages. Burwood has been focusing on staff training getting staff comfortable with a range of databases. Hard to fit in the training with all the other requirements on staff. Have done demonstrations of databases to teachers as a way of increasing their awareness too. Providing awareness of yourtutor with library membership
  • · The eresources section of the National Library has some really great pathfinders for Australian information, really valuable tool, many of the resources free, only some require National Library card.
  • · Discussion about version of yourtutor for adults with modules on job applications and so on.

8. Social media for reference

  • · Some councils have blanket bans on all social media
  • · CofS using yammer as useful tool for communicating with staff, including around reference.
  • · Fairfield often leading the use for council (need to document), customers not seeing it as a space for asking questions, starting to pick up followers, promotion didn’t work
  • · Some organsiation have too much structure for it to work
  • · Wollongong using multiple authroised uses, have representatives from each branch, so districbuted structure sounds like working well, and presents diverse view across the library, different strengths, and continuity, having event booked out via facebook, and having discussions about it between library clients. Interest from other areas of council too.
  • · Pinterest, tumblr, twitter, flip, pulse, google currents used to trigger ideas for reference, as part of professional development. Ways of looking at reference differently, and the ways they will work for different people
  • · Discussion about social media image with people of different ages in the community. Importance of using a tool properly. Highlighting the safe use of social media and training people in the safe use, to help with public perceptions and use. Some tools specific social media training, some broader introduction to social media. Dynamic learning online as popular tool
  • · Fairfield uses bilingual tutors for internet training, use SLV computer handouts in community languages

10 Other business

· Corporate Library group on the RISG wiki, meet three times a year. Corporate libraries moving from collections, but services still being provided for council staff as a client group. Minutes and agendas will be available soon on RISG wiki. http://referenceandinformationservices.wikifoundry.com/page/NSW+Local+Government+Corporate+Library+Group · Group is writing on module for ref-ex on council staff as a user group. Great for council staff to know that library staff can help them. · Ref-ex editing done, have a look at the revised modules.

Next meeting to be timed for after the HSC, will be held at Campsie Library.
