Marketing and Programs Working Group Meeting

13 December 2018

Cabramatta Library

The meeting began with a tour of the Workary and the AR/VR space at Fairfield Library.

1. Market Segementation - Lydie Bacot from the City of Sydney gave a brief overview of the concept of Market Segmenation which breaks communities down to areas of interest and used as target areas in marketing plans. A general discussion was held regarding this idea and if any library was using this method. Not alot of libraries had Marketing Plans, however Wollongong Library have a draft plan. “Market segmentation - The process of defining and subdividing a large homogenous market into clearly identifiable segments having similar needs, wants, or demand characteristics. Its objective is to design a marketing mix that precisely matches the expectations of customers in the targeted segment. Few companies are big enough to supply the needs of an entire market; most must breakdown the total demand into segments and choose those that the company is best equipped to handle.” < http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/market-segmentation.html>

A number of libraries are exploring using technology which assists with this including:

2. Digital programing in Libraries A general discussion was had around the different digital programs libraries might be doing.

Campbelltown has been using a free AR program called Quiver Vision http://www.quivervision.com/ which allows children to colour in sheets and when they place the device over the sheet, the image appears in 3D. The library has been using this at different activation points and it has been very popular with library memebrs.

Camden Library is planning 3 levels of programing with their new cubicon 3D Printer. They needed to resolve some technical issues with this first. Not all jobs work so libraries so are using ready made designs and user designs using programs such as Tinkerspace.

Wollongong has sewing machines which they are using for programs.

Sutherland is thinking of winding up it's Maker Space and focusing on dedicated programing.

Parramatta has done some successful Smart Home Devices workshops and demos where they have showed people what is available in the area, particularly around voice activation. People with Disabilities can use these devices.

Alot of libraries are market testing, trying some programs first on a small scale before committing.
