Minutes of the Working Group on Multicultural Library Services (NSW) Quarterly meeting held on Monday 13th August 2007 @ Wollongong City Library

Minutes of Previous Meeting The minutes were accepted by Shauna Miller and seconded by Jane Greville

NSW Public Libraries Multicultural Services History Applicationto be made for grant from the Currey Fellowship : http://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/awards/currey.cfm A Committee, consisting of Oriana Acevedo, Noel Willis, Rosemary Worley and Mirjana Djukic held preliminary discussions with Dr Michael Jacklin who is interested in the project of writing the history of Multicultural Library Services in NSW. As an Associate Research fellow with the University of Wollongong he is responsible for contributing to the Multicultural subset of the AustLit database. Dr Jacklin has published a number of articles on life writing, writing across cultures, indigenous literatures, narrative theory etc. The Committee would like to endorse his application for the Currey Fellowship.

CRCSymposium (15-16 August 2007) The Commission holds an annual Community Relations Symposium to bring together delegates from community, government, academia and religious organisations to exchange ideas on their work on issues of community harmony in our multicultural society http://www.crc.nsw.gov.au/crc/forum/index.htm Oriana and Mirjana tried to register to present an item on MWGLS but it was too late. They will investigate how to publish an article on the Working Group in the next CRC (yearly) Report.

History week 15th-23rd September

Registration for the event for this year has passed however, all members should actively look at promoting multicultural heritage (displays, talks, collecting life stories etc.) and prepare for the next year event.

Glossary The glossary is ready but still waiting (for months) to be included on the SL website. A letter is to be drafted by Noel Willis and sent to the chair to submit to SLNSW in an endeavour to speed up the launch of this valuable resource

Multicultural Seminar The sub-committee is to regroup to complete plans for seminar in November. Invitations to be sent. The seminar will be $30per head covering the cost of speakers and catering. The State Librarian will launch MyLanguage at the seminar

Guest speakers Prof. Wenche Ommundsen and Dr. Michael Jacklin gave an informative and comprehensive presentation on AustLit database , and especially on the Australian Multicultural Writers subset http://www.austlit.edu.au/specialistDatasets/MW, The Australian Multicultural Writers subset includes biographical information about Australian writers who identify with particular heritages other than Australian (non English speaking and English speaking), cultural heritages, and bibliographical information about their works. While the subset concentrates on creative and critical literature, some non creative works are included. Ryde – Would like to know how other libraries deal with ILL bulk loans on the catalogue

Parramatta – Centre link talks and superannuation in Mandarin, Cantonese and Korean. Persian books available for loan

Blacktown- Italian items now available

Canterbury – African and Greek cultural events

Holroyd – Hindi collection launched

Willoughby – Moved to temporary position. Italian cultural display and workshops

Hurstville – Community language story time

Fairfield – Multicultural services survey on client satisfaction in the library review by external consultant

Marrickville- Having meetings with Youth Resource centre

Manly – Continuing with weekly Spanish and French lessons which are increasing in popularity

SLNSW – Launched Burmese collection Greek collection of poetry available Chinese selection day held at Marrickville very successful

The meeting concluded @ 1.30pm following a tour of the new Wollongong City Library
