2017 Readers’ advisory seminar 9.00 – 9.30 Registration

9.30 Welcome to State Library & housekeeping Oriana Acevedo, State Library of NSW

9.40am Robin Bradford @tuphlos watch on Blue Jeans at https://bluejeans.com/152373337 Robin Bradford works for Timberland Regional library district in Tumwater, Washington and started her career in book tyranny at the age of two, when she coerced her mom, dad, and sister into repeated readings of the relationship drama “The House that Jack Built”. Fast forward a [redacted] number of years later, and she is still addicted to books and dedicated to helping others discover the love of reading. Along the way, she has hit almost all of the reading related degrees (BA; MA in English, MS in Library Science, and a JD) but has found a permanent home in building reader focused, popular collections in public libraries. In 2016, she was awarded the librarian of the year award, from the Romance Writers of America. She has worked with authors to help get their titles into these collections, worked with librarians to push for equal treatment of genre fiction, and worked with readers so that they can find their favourite authors on their library’s shelves.

Why is diversity in books important? Diversity is not important. Diversity is reality.Human beings are not all the same. We come from many different places and have many different identities and experiences. Having only one kind of human being in the stories being told is flat-out bad storytelling. Diversity is reality. Let’s stop erasing that." Malinda Lo

2.5% of NSW population are Indigenous, 31.4% of NSW people were born overseas, and this is often not fully reflected in readers' advisory services. How Libraries develop their collections and provide services for the diverse range of social, cultural, and language groups within their community is often a challenge but one we can learn from by sharing our experiences. Have a look at how King County Library Service reminds their community that this is your library.
