Competition ideas

Display ideas

  • NB: "secret power" vs "super power" - there are lots of secret power possibilities eg. spy, community hero, environment / animals that can camouflage, talents like contortionist, magician, musician
  • "Reading is my secret power because …." as an interactive display; different responses at different branch library locations in the same theme
  • a phoenix has a secret power - make a giant display phoenix (cellophane is great for flames) and surround it with the shortlisted book covers
  • make a "Stink Bug" themed photo cut out board
  • put the shortlisted book covers on digital displays
  • make badges for each of the short listed books (a wearable display)
  • photo booth for superpower photos with fun props

  • share photos of library staff wearing costumes / feather boas and masks decorated in style of books or superheroes
  • photograph a group of items that are hints to what one of the books is about
  • Memes (popular with YA) - have a mememaking competition, caption this, inspiration from the Game of Thrones 4 pictures without spoilers memes
  • share book trailers with short book reviews
  • use social media as a campaign leading up to Book Week (feature the shortlist to build awareness / excitement about the winners announcement OR hold a community elimination competition of shortlisted titles)

  • daily Facebook posts featuring Book Week events in the library and storytime activities
  • library enewsletters - share the shortlists and embed book trailers
  • staff profile pics and state what their super power would be
  • engage YA via social media with reviews of the YA shortlisted books > ask interactive questions

Makerspaces

  • sessions leading up to Book Week to make your own Book Week costume
  • quite a few of the books this year feature birds … you could 3D print some feathers as well as look at real ones https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-print-models/feather
  • LEGO / robotics / animate a scene from one of the shortlisted books
  • film with a green screen to create "secret power" scenarios in unusual backdrops (look for a green screen app for your phone / tablet)

School groups

  • take home packs for visiting groups to help with short turnaround of visits
  • a secret bag : inside are small objects related to the books - a child chooses one and then matches it to the book
  • make a spy box … paint the inside of a box black, make an opening to peep through, what do you spy inside?

  • treasure hunt for characters from the books around the library
  • secret story: using pictures of the characters from the books, give each group of 6 children one picture and the first child in the group begins the story relating to the picture, the next child continues, etc.
  • wrap shortlisted books in brown paper, write a few clues on the wrapping and see if the group can guess which book it is before reading it

Library colleagues

  • alert everyone to the Book Week dates

  • staff book reviews
  • staff profile pics and state what their super power would be (display in the library or share via social media)
  • dress up as book characters (or super heroes) for photos … perhaps a competition

  • hold a team meeting to discuss Book Week
  • Play Book Week Bingo … read any 5 of the shortlisted titles

Partnering with council colleagues and local organisations

  • environmental groups (lots of books with themes of conservation and endangered animals)
  • distributing trees for planting (perhaps to school groups)
  • ask other council departments to come in and talk about sustainability / insect habitats
  • insect hotels / bird houses for people to put in their gardens
  • story walks > insect walk and collect leaves, sticks along the way to create a habitat
