Rebecca from Willoughby gave an overview of their HLS.

4.Seniors in Focus seminar 2018

Seminar is to be held at the State Library Friday 16th November 2018. Annette (Camden) removed herself from the group and gave her apologies. Many thanks for her contributions so far. Laurie from Wollongong suggested her colleague Irene Smith to take Annette place on the working group.

Some suggestions for topics and speakers for the seminar are as follows -

5.Legal Aid and Drug Information – Catherine Byrant and Andrea Curr (SLNSW)

A reminder that there are great free resources available for seniors, which can be ordered and included with your deliveries:

• Speaking for myself: planning for later life decision making – available from Legal Aid at . Click on the Older People topic and scroll down the list until you find the book.
• Legal Aid’s older people pamphlets – a series of A4 pamphlets on topics including Adult children living at home, Are you a grandparent etc. Find them by following the link above.
• Seniors guide to consumer rights in NSW – available from Fair Trading NSW at http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/ftw/About_us/Publications/Order_publications.page? – it’s listed under General consumer publications
• Legal Aid diaries can be ordered.

6. Marketing and promotion

Objective 5 Strategic Plan – Capturing statistics to demonstrate the impact and benefit of HLS Measuring Impact of Library Services The State Library of Queensland published a tool for measuring The Impact of Libraries as Creative Spaces http://www.plconnect.slq.qld.gov.au/manage/research/libraries-as-creative-spaces The tool considers the following aspects of a library service or activity:

1. PROVIDES ACCESS TO RESOURCES Providing assistance and enabling access to information and materials such as craft supplies, historical records and digital media.
2. HELPS TO BUILD IDEAS Exposing the public to new ideas and facilitating the development of curiosity, experimentation and risk taking.
3. CONNECTS PEOPLE TO CIVIC ENGAGEMENT Engaging the public in democracy, citizenship, rehabilitation and collaborative work with other public and private institutions.
4. SUPPORTS THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNITY Providing a place for community development to happen by encouraging cultural diversity, equality, equity and social capital.
5. AIDS CULTURAL PARTICIPATION Facilitating public culture by organising and delivering formal and informal events that allow people to participate in diverse ways.
6. SUPPORTS HEALTH AND WELLBEING Providing relaxation, entertainment and leisure activities that promote physical and mental wellbeing.
7. PROVIDES FOR EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT Making possible, through creative practice, continuous learning and informal approaches to education that offer an alternative to formal institutions.
8. ENCOURAGES ECONOMIC PRODUCTIVITY Enabling access to mentoring and networking for business and occupational purposes, and generating income through creative practice.

After discussion Mylee suggested that we defer this and make it a focus for group in 2019, at which time we can hold a workshop on how collecting statistics for HLS. Meanwhile if the group could look at any surveys they conduct and keep them on file for this workshop.

The following topics were discussed.

Multicultural Bulk Loan Service

The State Library Multicultural Bulk Loan Service resumed on Monday 16 October 2017. Over 690 requests have been processed since the service recommenced. The turnaround times are slower and currently it is difficult to supply individual loan requests due to the high volume of loans being processed. The State Library has made the entire large print and talking book collections available to NSW public libraries on long term loan. Library managers were invited to express interest in receiving an allocation of these collections in July 2017 and the State Library has distributed material to participating libraries. Be Connected –digital literacy initiative for older Australians

In early October 2017 the Federal Government launched the Be Connected digital literacy initiative for older Australians. Be Connected (which supersedes Broadband for Seniors) is a four-year digital literacy program that aims to support people aged 50 years and over, who have minimal or no engagement with digital technology, to ‘thrive in the digital world’. The program will focus on one on one or small group training, targeting community and grass roots organisations as well as volunteers, family and friends who assist older people to use technology. Libraries are eligible to join the Be Connected Network and apply for grants, further information is available at: https://beconnected.esafety.gov.au Spoonful magazine – Arts Health Institute Mylee is investigating contact details for Dr Maggie Haertsch and the Arts Health Institute (their website and emails are currently inaccessible). They have magazines to give away. 7.Wellness and Reablement – Guest Speaker Ellen Miller (Aged and Disability Co-Ordinator, Willoughby Council)

Ellen will make presentation available to the group. Not available as yet.

10.Matters arising from previous minutes

11.Programming

• Randwick – events for adults, including chess, Thai Chi, Learning Mandarin, Mah-jong, bridge classes.
• Blacktown – table tennis outside library, chess, games day.
• Waverley – Sketch Flash program, collage, movies, join a club expo.

12.General business

Jodie from Randwick mentioned a focus group that Oriana (SLNSW) was running about devices. Jodie will find out information on the findings and pass on to the group.
