Reference at the Metcalfe 2013

The 2013 Reference @ the Metcalfe seminar for New South Wales public library reference and information services staff - 7 May 2013.

Every day we embark on a variety of reference journeys with and for our customers. Some are short and simple, some have many stops along the way and others seem to leave us wondering if we may have taken a wrong turn. We travel using a variety of methods too - some of us along the wide open roads of the Internet superhighway that promises to take us any where any time, some of us on a guided tour of our favourite databases and some of us back to our favourite well-used copies of reference books. And during this journey we try to keep in mind the following (slightly modified) five laws of of library science from Ranganathan

  1. Tools (Books) are for use.
  2. Every reader his [or her] tool (book).
  3. Every tool (book) its reader.
  4. Save the time of the reader.
  5. The library is a growing organism
