**Reference at the Metcalfe 2013** The 2013 Reference @ the Metcalfe seminar for New South Wales public library reference and information services staff - 7 May 2013. Every day we embark on a variety of reference journeys with and for our customers. Some are short and simple, some have many stops along the way and others seem to leave us wondering if we may have taken a wrong turn. We travel using a variety of methods too - some of us along the wide open roads of the Internet superhighway that promises to take us any where any time, some of us on a guided tour of our favourite databases and some of us back to our favourite well-used copies of reference books. And during this journey we try to keep in mind the following (slightly modified) five laws of of library science from Ranganathan 1. Tools (Books) are for use. 2. Every reader his [or her] tool (book). 3. Every tool (book) its reader. 4. Save the time of the reader. 5. The library is a growing organism The 2013 RISG Reference @ the Metcalfe Seminar was held at the SLNSW, Metcalfe Auditorium, on May 7 from 9:30am to 4:30pm. 9.35am Keynote: Lee Rainie via Skype, from Pew Internet. @pewinternet @lrainie. 10.35am Roving reference Wilma Bancroft from Kogarah Kristen Blinco from Hurstville presentation here and Samson Leung from Canada Bay presentation here 11.35am Mobile apps & interfaces John Taggart from Manly talking about apps and rss for professional reading followed by discussion presentation here 12.00pm-12.45pm lunch 12.45pm-1.45pm Ingrid Mason for HuNI @1n9r1d Presentation available from this link, with different options for viewing 1.45pm Marketing electronic resources: Nathan Turner from Parramatta, Andrew Gee from Wollongong presentation here 2:25 CWA on Pinterest, Shiralee Franks, Tamworth presentation here 2.45 Update on wikipedia training for public libraries + update on Mitchell Whitelaw datavisualisation 2.55 five minutes of stretching 3:00 Small multiples http://small.mu/ 4.00 - 4.05pm Wrap up and reminder about evaluation This seminar has been provided by the NSW Reference and Information Services Group http://referenceandinformationservices.wikifoundry.com/ Venue and catering provided by State Library of NSW ---- Back to Reference and information services working group home page Reference and information services working group About this working group RISG Next meeting and agenda RISG Minutes RISG Seminars and events RISG
