  • What is reference service?
  • Who is involved in reference service in your library?
  • From information you read in your library's mission statement or reference policy (or from talking to your supervisor), discuss the value of reference service to your particular community.
  • What do you think reference service provides that clients can't find elsewhere or more easily in your community?
  • What makes your library's community special and what kinds of materials are emphasized in your collection that meet the needs of your particular community and might be different from other libraries?
  • Does your library have clients who speak another language or who are from another culture?
  • Describe what your library does to make clients feel comfortable in the reference area when asking questions.
  • How do you allow some privacy for working with a client with a very personal question?
  • Describe what your library does to make it easy for clients to find things in the reference area, i.e. the arrangement or organization of the area.
  • Describe five places or different sources in your library to find information about your town or suburb.
  • Discuss four reasons why clients may not want or be able to express their real information needs.
  • What are the steps of the reference process?
